SLY GROG SELLING.
A CONVICTION. ' [Per Press Association.] ' . DUNEDIN, Feb. 19. The sly grog-selling prosecutions are proceeding at. Tapanui. George Dunnett, of Kelso, was convicted and fined £.40 and costs, in default one mouth’s imprisonment. At Tapanui, to-day, tho information against M’Cann was dismissed, and the hearing of the fresh informations laid yesterday were aidjourned. It was stated that M’Cann would only allow one stranger to enter the bar at a time, and always locked the door behind him. Fearnley and Williams, in the police employ, gave evidence as to being supplied with drink. Williams (who was at one time in the Deeds Office, at Napier) fixed no definite date, and for the defence evidence was given that on the day stated by Fearnley, M’Cann, had gone away fishing from an early hour till late'at night. [From Our Correspondent.] The sly-grog informers have been paying surprise visits throughout Central Otago. Besides the Tapanui cases, which are now proceeding, summonses have been served on two boarding-house-keepers at Wedderburn, and on a.settler at Poclbuni. The first cases will be heard at Naseby •on Feb. 26, and the Tatter case at Ophir on Feb. 21.
