THE FIRST CONTINGENT.

Sir, —In som© of your late papers I have noticed where Captain Madock’s name has been mentioned in respect to having hii-s bravery acknowledged, and it is quite dime that it was. We have several men in -the First Contingent who- are worthy of recognition for brave deeds. Here are their names and what they have dene:—Captain Madocks, leading bayonet charge on New Zealand Hill; Captain Davis, for carrying, a sergeant out under heavy rifle fire at Dornkop, on May 28; Lieutenant Hughes, for carrying Corporal Byrne out -at Kroon-, spruit, March 31; Trooper W. Renton, for carrying Trooper Naim out at Krc.onsprmt; Sergeant Mahood, for carrying Farrier Parkes out at Jasfontsin, December, loj9. The officers deserve the . Distinguished Service Order, and -Sergeant Ma-hoo-d the V.C., and Trooper Renton the. Distinguished Service Medal. If brave men’s deeds are allowed -to go unrecognised, what encouragement dtoes it give to a man to do brave -deeds ? In respect to the scarf which was given to Trooper Coutts, I read in your paper that it was voted by the men to be given to him-. ■ Allow me to contradict that statement. I think if it had been put to the men it would have gone elsewhere, but it was settled by the officers, and. a lot of us never knew anything about it until Coutts had it in his possession.— I am, etc.,' . ONE WHO WAS THERE. Han-mer Plains, Feh. 15.
