ALLEGED SLY-GROG SELLING.
MMJBE OF FIRST CHABSE. ( ; [Per Press Association.} • DUNEDIN, Feb. 18. ' At Tapanui, within the Chxtha prohibi-. tion district, Mr Stafford, S.M., was en-j gaged hearing further oases of alleged sly grog-selling. James O’Dowd was first; charged with selling liquor on Monday.; The principal witness was a - man named Fearnley, employed by the police at police pay, but combining with it travelling for, Messrs Wrigglesworth and Binna, seeking 1 orders for photographs. Ho deposed to or- ; dering four drinks for the Rev Tosswiß,; Dallas (in Government employ), O’Dowd, and himself. The Rev Toss-will denied having been served on. the night in question,; and Dallas’s evidence was somewhat hazy.! He could not- say what drink he had oxj wnat the others had, nor whether any! money was paid; but he saw something like coin on the table. After the defendant hod explicitly denied the evidence of Fearnley,; the case was dismissed. A second charge! was laid, and will be heard! to-morrow.; There are in -all, six infonnationfi. Evidently Fearnley was responsible for the recent r raids in other parts of Chitha.
