Am explosion at the Ohilworth Gunpowder Works at Guildford killed the six only workmen in the building. BRITISH EXCHEQUER. BONDS. Over twenty-five millions have been subscribed for the British Exchequer bonds. The issue averaged £97 5s 4d. THE GOVERNOR OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA. Captain the Hon Arthur Lawley, the new Governor of Western Australia, has been made a Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George. AN ELECTION UPSET. (Received Feb. 14, 11.1 p.m.) At the late elections, Mr John Barker, Liberal, was returned for Maidstone, defeating Mr Cornwallis, Conservative. Mr Cornwallis has now successfully petitioned against Mr Barker, whose counsel admitted that those who were technically Mr Barker’s agents committed bribery. (The votes polled at the election were— Barker 2201, Cornwallis 2163.) DESPAIRING OF JUSTICE. PARIS, Feb. 13. Colonel Picquart, who was dismissed from the French Army, for his connection with the Dreyfus case, has formally withdrawn his appeal for re-instatement in the service.
