CHRISTCHURCH. MONDAY, FEB. 11. (Before Messrs Scott and Richardson, J.P.'s.) ' Drunkenness. —A ■ first offender was fined 10s.—Alexander Cunningham was fined ss.—Nellie Lewis, alias Wilbert, who had been often before the Court, was sentenced to a month's imprisonment without the option of a fine.—James Ryan was fined 10s; all for having been.. drunk in 'the public streets.—Mary M'Kegney, who had just finished a term of fourteen days in gaol, pleaded hard to be let off, and she would leave for Wellington next day, as she had a ticket. But the police and the Bench declined to take a word that had been so often broken, and as she was found guilty of habitual drunkenness, she was sent to gaol for a month.—George and Elizabeth Thackwell were charged with drunkenness in Hereford Street, and causing a disturbance in a boarding house. Mr Donnelly appeared for the defence. Accused did not appear, and the charge was heard in their absence. The cases were heard separately, that against the man being taken first. Ultimately' Mrs Thackwell appeared. She denied the drunkenness in toto, and Mr Donnelly pleaded that as the woman was about to apply for the Old Age Pension, a conviction might damage her prospects. The two acciised were convicted, and fined 5s each. Prohibition Order.—A prohibition order was applied for by a mother against her son, and the hearing was adjourned till Friday, to admit of an amicable arrangement. Alleged Assault.-—George Richard Wilson, charged with assaulting Thomas Downie, and biting a piece cut of Downie's lip, Was '•'•remanded"' till Tuesday,' bail being 'allowed in £25, g.Bd;two sureties for'the same amount. -■■■.. Breaches of the By-laws:—George Allan was fined 5s for riding a bicycle without a light after sunset.—Charles Cameron was fined 10s for' riding 'on the footpath.— Thomas Gurney, who was charged with riding on a footpath at Lower Riccarton, pleaded that the road, was unformed, 'and there w:as no place to ride on but the footpath. He was fined ss. (Before Mr R. Beetham, S.M.) Civil -Cases.—ln the following cases, judgment was given for the plaintiffs by default:—H. E. ißoardman v. F. F. Turvey, claim £1; Christchurch Meat Company, Limited, v. W. W. Webb, claim £lO lis. Claim tor Rent.—Annie Magnell claimed £3 rent from R. Portelli. The defendant had been given notice to quit, and did not consider, that he wais called upon to pay rent while under notice. Judgment was given for the plaintiff for £1 10s and costs.
