ATTEMPTED SUICIDE.
DRINK AND A BOOTLACE. At the Lyttelton Magistrate's Court yesterday, before Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M., John Burke O'Brien, who, on Jan. 8, had tried to strangle himself with his shirt and bootlaces in the Lytelton lock-up, was charged with attempted suicide. He pleaded' " Not guilty with any intention of committing suicide." He was, he said, very much under the influence of liquon, and "had hardly any recollection of the transaction." Sergeant Rutledge described the man's attempt at self-destruction.. The accused begged that the term of a month, which he is serving for habitual drunkenness, might not be extended, and made profuse promises of reform. Mr Smaill said that he was prepared to take O'Brien into the Samaritan Home on his discharge. Mr Bishop passed a sentence of three months' imprisonment, net to take effect as long as the accused remained in the Home.
