A party of -Boers wearing kharki and British bandoliers surprised the sentry at Zaurfonteia and got within seven yards of the trenches before they were identified. Their leader was unhorsed, but crawled back and was shot dead as he rose. Se proved to be a menlber of the Free State Volksraad. One hundred and fifty British, with the utmost gallantry, repelled one thousand of the enemy. Lieutenant Freemason, with ninety of the 'Cheshire Mounted Infantry and a few details, who were entrenched at Kaalfontein, came off scathless. A force of -eight hundred B-oers, with two guns, vainly shelled the position and made repeated attempts to rush the trenches, but were splendidly repelled with heavy losses. The Russian Budget predicts a surplus of 73,000,000 roubles dn 1901 over the ordinary expenditure. An Australasian bowling team to visit England is in course of formation. It will leave for England in April. Dr Creighton, Bishop of London, is dead. Li Hung Chang, on behalf of the Emperor of -China, has signed the acceptance of the Joint Note of the Allies.
