THE LEAGUE OF NEW ZEALAND WHEELMEN. A meeting of the North Canterbury Centre of the League of New Zealand Wheelman was held in the Clarendon Hotel last evening; presente-Mes-srs T. Clarkson (chairman), J. E. Green, F. D. Kesteven, D. J. . Fraser, J. Moirtagu and J Burgess. An, apology for absence was received from Mr Batchelor! The Pioneer Club wrote, giving particulars of the case ip which H. Graham' had started! from his wrong mark in a race at the club s recent meeting. It was decided to severely caution the offender, and to warm riders that if such an offence came before the Centre in future it would be punished by a heavy penalty. D. M. Rodger applied for a remission of a fine of ss, imposed because he had ■ conspired .•with another competitor to defeat the ends of the promoter's in a Bump Handicap at Lancaster Park, by refusing to try to pass another competitor. Rodger attended and explained’ that he had ridden the race in what he considered was the best way to win. The Centre decided that the fine must be paid. The same rider appealed for tine remission of a 10s .fine, imposed on a charge that, being an amateur, he had asked the Secretary of the Pioneer Club to give him casn for a prize he had won. After hearing Rodger’s explanation the members were satisfied that he had intended to purchase a trophy with bis prize-money, and remitted . the fine. ■ The Chairman reported that, as not sufficient entries had been forthcoming, the inter-club road championship races had been abandoned for the time. The Rangiora Athletic Club wrote, stating’ that it had no further evidence to tender in the case in which S. Frew and S. Bc.yd charged T. Oates and H. Amos with • having made an arrangement in the Five-mile Handicap at Rangiora, on Jan. 1, by which Oates was to ride in Amos’s interest in that race. The Centre’s representative at the meeting, Mr H. Wilkinson, forwarded a report on the case. Amos denied having. made any arrangement with Oates, other than that the pair were to share’ the pacing equally in their endeavour to pace the field. When Oates was lapped and paced him he accepted! the pace, but there was no prior arrangement. Oates corroborated this. He 'admitted that, after he lost his own chance, he stayed on the track to pace the other competitor. It was decided to acquit Amos, and to fine Oates- 10s. Mr C. E. Meredith Kaye was appointed the Centre’s representative on the League Council. The Ellesmere C.C., replying to a recommendation from the Centre, acknowledged the recommendation, but that the Centre should - confine its attention to the business for which .it was 'supposed to exist. It was decided not to receive the. letter, but to return it to the club, with a request that the Centre should receive a courteous and business-like acknowledgement of its last communication. ' Permits were granted to the Ashburton Sports Association for a meeting to- be held on Feb. 21, and to the North Canterbury Caledonian Society, for a meeting to Jjc held on Feb. 28. The Christchurch C;C., referring to the Centre’s intimation that it had broken the Centre’s rule limiting the number of riders on Lancaster Park track, replied--that it -had received no official communication of the passing of the rule in question. The Amberley Club wrote, forwarding the measurements oT its track,and the Secretary was instructed! to inform the club and the Centre handicapper of the number of competitors that would be allowed to compete on the track in various races. C. L. H. Hiorns, 100yds and 220yds champion runner of the colony, will compete on level terms against H. Amos, amateur cycling champion, over a 100yds course, both commencing from a standing, start, CHRISTCHURCH CYCLING CLUB. A meeting ,of the. - , committee of he Christchurch , Cycling Club was held! in the clubhouse, Gloucester Street on. Monday evening; pre-sent'—-Messrs F. .T. Pannell (chairman), W. E. Thompson,', G. -Martin-, J. R.gßurns, J. Burgess, J. Boyd and R. Beveridge. The Sub-committee brought forward - ils report regarding . the improvements to tie clubhouse, the main suggestions being the moving of the. reading-room upstairs, and the better accommodation for the storage of bicycles, and it was decided to have the lavatory renovated; Mr Thompson and the Secretary were empowered to have the ■ improvements started at once. It was decided to hold a special and general meeting of the club on Jan. 28. Mr J. S. Wearn was elected on the committee of the club, and the following gentlemen were added to-'the Entertaining Committee—Messrs R. Beveridge, J. Brown, J. R. Burns, and J. Wearn. The Secretary reported that Mr W- E. Sorrell; tiad presented the : club with a series >f photographs of the club’s opening run, including the -hill-climbing contest, and it was decided to forward the. thanks of the club to Mr Sorrell. It was resolved that the captain, on behalf .of the club., should present Messrs Post, Joyce and Tompkins, who iiave been married recently, with a marble clock each. The Christchurch Hardware Club held a road race on Monday, at 6.30 p.m., to Yaldhurst and back, distance about fourteen miles. There were seventeen starters, and a, splendid race'was the result.
