THE SUPPOSED LEPROSY CASE.
INVESTIGATIONS BY DR MASON. ISOLATION DECIDED ON. NO DANGER TO THE PUBLIC ANTICIPATED. Yesterday morning ; Dr Mason, the Chief Medical Health Officer, saw the woman whose case was referred to at the meeting of the Charitable Aid Board on Wednesday, and who, it has been stated, is suffering from leprosy. He examined her, but will go further into the case today, when Dr Clayton-will be present. In the afternoon, Dr Mason was waited on by representatives of the Charitable Aid (Board, and the case was discussed. Dr Mason stated that it had been decided by the medical experts that, although no definite diagnosis had been made, the woman ought to ha properly housed and a nurse ought to be appointed to look after/her. It was thought that it was not a case which could he treated in the general ward of a hospital, and it was. desirable that some provision should' he made for attending to the sufferer in a separate institution. Dr Mai-on also stated that the Public Health Act of MOO placed the responsibility of providing for such a case on the local authority, which in this case was the City Council. There was, however, an expectation that an arrangement would be come to between the Council and the hospital authorities whereby the latter would take charge of the case. Dr Mason has arranged to meet the Mayor of Christchurch at 11.30 this morning, to sea what can be done in the matter. In an interview with a representative of this journal last evening, Dr Mason tsadd that it had been decided that it was a case .for isolation, as much in the interest of the woman as in that of the public. There was no danger to the public, but, on the other band, the woman at present was not able to obtain the attention she needed.
