DUNEDIN ITEMS.

[Feom Odk Correspondent.] DUNEDIN, Jan. 9. The Mayor, Mr .Chisholm, in advising the Acting-Premier of last night’® meeting, says:—“A general desire has been expressed here that a section of the Imperial Guard should be brought over to New Zealand and visit the cliief centres. If, say, a hundred, including a section of the Black Watch, could accompany the troopers returning by Orient, tbeir presence would intensify the feeling of Imperial fraternity that prevails to such a general extent at present.” The “ Star ” say® that Mr Percy Sargood has been appointed to the London management of the firm of Sargood, Son and Ewen, and leaves for England immediately. In consequence of this week’s sharp advance in the prices of fat stock, the Dunedin butchers give notice of an all-round increase of prices. It seems that some dozen plain-clothes constables put in an appearance on bicycles in the prohibition district last night, and made a clever raid simultaneously at Balclutba, Clinton, Owaka, Tapanui and Kelso. It is acknowledged that at Balclutha a, good deal of spirits' was seized in four well-known establishments, but a Tapanui message says that only one bottle of whisky was obtained by the raiders in the two districts around Tapanui. Seeing that it fairly teemed with rain last night, the myrmidons of the law must have had a very unpleasant time of it. The Otago Central Railway League was anxious to send' a deputation to accompany the Minister of Public Works on his tour of inspection next week, but Mr Hall-Jones declined their attentions, and says that he had taken the same stand when at Auckland.
