THE JUBILEE MEMORIAL.
TO THE EDITOR, gjr,—l do not wish to throw cold water on anv movement made in connection! with the fitting celebration of the Jubilee of Canterbury, but before it is too late should like to’point to a way of appropriately marking the occasion. At the time of the Diamond Jubilee of her Majesty the citizens responded nobly to the call, and subscribed a larwe sum towards a memorial of that occasion. Though heavily subsidised by the City" Council and assisted by the possesion of the clock and ironwork, that money has been wasted. The. memorial, as such, is neither useful nor ornamental. It is hidden by buildings higher than, itself on either side of it.' It is useless to niore than a few
in the immediate neighbourhood as a time indicator, and, from either an artistic or architectural point of view, it is a nightmare. Therefore, I suggest that- it be razed to the ground, an entirely new, lofty, substantial, and ornamental structure be -erected on that site, within or around which all the various statuary suggested for the proposed memorial could be grouped. This would be an appropriate and permanent memorial of both Jubilees, and would be something that the people of Canterbury could look upon with pride.—l am, etc., AN EARLY SETTLER. Christchurch, Oct. 9, 1900.
