BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS.
. * The annual sports 5u connection With the Boys’ High School were held yesterday at Lancaster Park. The weather was beautiful and the turf was in good order. Although in the morning the number present was nob large, in the afternoon there was a good gathering of spectators. School sports meetings are, as a rule, enjoyable gatherings, and yesterday’s meeting was no exception to the' rule, ail the events being contested in an excellent spirit of friendly rivalry. The challenge cup, given by Mr Vv. Montgomery for the greatest number of points in the senior events, was won by M. H. Robinson, a boy under sixteen, who showed very good form. The junior challenge cup, given by Mr S. Nixon, for the greatest number of points in the events for boys under fourteen, went to D. C. Guthrie, who scored nineteen points, R. Harper coming next with seventeen points. Guthrie, who won this cup at last year’s meeting, performed very consistently throughout the meeting. Tno previous best record for throwing the cricket ball was beaten by K, B. Bain. The Old Boys’ Race was won by A. E. Coleman, from the 15yds mark, H. L. Arm!cage, 18yds, being second. Atkinson went to the front- when halfway down the straight, and won hy a couple of yards. Time—23 3-ssec. Second heat: A. E. Nutt, 7yds, 1; F. Warner, -6yds, 2; L. H. Reid, 18yds, 3.' Seventeen, others started. In this heat three of the boys fell at the turn into the straight, and one of ttyem was rather badly spiked. The three placed men were very close together. Time—24 l-ssec. The former kept his position, and though Harper came with a good run in the straight, won by a couple of yards. Time—6Bsec. 440Yds Handicap—S. J. Simpson, 29yds, 1; N. J. Brown, 7yds, 2. Thera was a field of about thirty starters. , Brown led into the straight, but Simpson, who finished in a very determined manner, just beat, him on the post. The judges did not award a third place, four boys being bunched together a yard or two behind Brown. Time—Glseo.

Two others started, but the three placed boys were the only competitors who finished. Robinson led from the start and won easily; Campbell a bad'. third. Time—--60 2-ssec.

Time—24 2-ssec. - At the conclusion of the Sports the prices were presented by Mrs Lawrence, wife of the noting headmaster. OLD BOYS’ ASSOCIATION. The annual reunion of the High School Old Boys’ Association took the form of a dinner and smoke concert ait the Art Gallery last evening. Dr Thacker was in the chair, and there was a very good attendance nf Old Boy's. Mr E. E. Papprill proposed the toast of “ The Old School,” which was responded to iby Mr J. H. Smith. Dr Thacker proposed the toast of ’“Old 1 Soys at the FrorJt.” Corporal Symes, of the. First Contingent, in replying, said tlialt steme '‘of the things thait had bean said in the newspapers about the regulars were rather ungenerous. “ Tommy Atkins ” was a firstclass fighting man, and the colonial volunteer, who was generally very careful of himself, could not give him many points ait his own game. Mr W. D. Campbell, who represented the “ Lyttelton Times ” in South Africa, also replied to this toast. The toast of “The Masters” was proposed by Mr E. M. Saudstein, and was responded to by Messrs ,W, Walton, R. M. Laing, R. Speight and A. Alertoo. Dr Orchard'proposed the toast of “The Acting Headmaster.” Mr B. K, S. Lawrence, in replying, said that, he was glad to be able to tell them that Mr Bevan-Brcvwn’s • health was improving, and he would be leaving England for New Zealand on Nov. 9. . He had recently attempted to compile a list of Old Boys who were serving iii Smith Africa, and had found that there were at.least twenty-five. Mr H. L. Armitage proposed the toast of “ Old Boys m Sport and Pastime,” and this was replied fo by Messrs G. Scott ('football) and T. W. Reese (cricket). During the evening- songs were' sung by Messrs G. Scott, A. Merton, W. Sherris, T. W. Cane and R. E. Hall. Air H. L. Armitage gave a recitation, and' Air E. M. Sardstein played a violin solo and Air L. Lewin a piano s/010. The gathering was a very enjoyable one, and much of its success was due to the energy displayed by Alessrs H. L. Armitage and J. H. Miles, who were the principal organisers. On the motion of Mr T. Clarkson, a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to,.those gentlemen. The proceedings were brought to a close by the singing of “ Auld Lang Syne.”
