COUNCILLOR APPLEBY'S BALLOON.
TO THE EDITOR. gir 7 __l am extremely pleased that you are showing some interest in municipal government ; just criticism at your bands on any municipal question cannot fail but todo good, and I hope for its continuance. You did me the honour of devoting a half column sub-leader under the above head-lines, referring to remarks made by me at the open-' ing of the new Fire Brigade Station on Tlmrsdav evening when responding to the toast of'" the City Council." You state I challenged the truthfulness of ,; some modest statements" made by you on the unclean, state of some special 'parts of the city. Please accept my assurance that I never saw that "modest statement" until this afternoon, and was otherwise unaware, of its existence. My remarks, at a late Council meeting, that Christchurch, as a whole, is the best-kept town in the colony do still, in my judgment, hold good. lam as fully aware as your special reporter may be that there are tsome spots in the city generally offensive. .JVell, we have two inspectors to watch them. Increased diligence on their part, backed by tho watchfulness of the Press, may consummate your evident desires, and mine too, that such nuisances should not be allowed to exist. —T am, etc., ARTHUR APPLEBY.
