ROAD BOARDS.

SPRINGS. The monthly meeting of the Springs Road Board was held on March 22. Messrs Richards, Dawson, and Edwards wrote asking permission to make a water-race on the side of and across the Burnham Road. Permission was granted on the usual conditions. The Railway Department wrote with reference to a road through the railway reserve at Rabbit Island, and enclosed the copy of an agreement to the effect that the Board would erect and maintain a fence between the land and the railway. As the road had been applied for at the request of the Waihora Domain Board, it was decided to ask that body to enter into a similar agreement with the Road Board. It was decided to make a progress payment of £6l 16b 8d to the Jensen Patent Construction Company. The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote asking particulars of the expenditure of thirds and fourths in connection with Reserve 1238, at Springston. It Was decided to furnish the necessary returns.. The Board of Education wrote with reference to stagnant water complained of by the Rabbit Island School Committee. The letter stated that the Waihora Domain Board had, advised that a much better counse was open to the Board than that previously suggested, and asked, the Road Board, as the local authority, to take steps to prevent the accumulation- of the water. It was decided to inform the Board of Education that there was a natural lagoon extending some distance on each side of the road, and that to drain into the canal, as euggested would "be costly and dangerous, as it would be necessary to make a cutting over four feet deep, and this would render the surrounding district liable to be flooded. The Board had already made- a large expenditure m that part of the district, and had no more funds for the purpose. A petition, signed by thirty-four residents and ratepayers, asked the Board to purchase and make forty chains of road through R.S. 10026, to connect Marshall's and Gould's Roads, but the Board decided that it had no funds for that purpose. The following tenders were accepted for reserves:—Reserve, with cottage, at •Ellesmere, J. N. Drury, at £25 per year-; reserve at Springston, Mrs M'Meekm, £5 ; Rolleston Reserve, F. H. Brittan, £1; Greenpark Reserve, Mrs MVicker,_ £l. The Overseer's report was read, and it was decided to cart 200yds of shingle on to Hudson's and Greenpark Roads, and 150 yards, of soil and clay on to the Mahuke Road. As Californian thistles had been found on the Tramway Reserve Road, it was decided to take effective measures to keep down the weed, and, if possible, to destroy it. Instructions were given to the Clerk to sue for all rates not paid by March 30, with 10 per cent added. Accounts amounting to £435 5s Id were passed for payment.
