Mr Piper was again successful with starting, and in the Provincial Handicap, started in front of the stand, he was applauded. There ivere three falls in the Hurdles, but none resulted seriously. CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB.' The annual general meeting of the Canter- , bury Jockey Club was held in the rooms i yesterday afternoon. Mr G. G. Stead was in the chair, and there were about thirty i members present. | The annual report stated that the expen- \ diture had exceeded the receipts by £1095 15s 4d, the reason being that £1384 19s lid Had been spent on permanent improve--meats and on plant account. Under ordinary circumstances the revenue' would , have been sufficiently elastic to have met , this expenditure out of current receipts, but it had rained in ■torrents on the last day of the November meeting, with the result that the receipts were fully £IOOO less than might fairly have been expected. Notwithstanding this loss, the year’s receipts had been practically equal to those of the previous season, so that, had the weather been fine throughout, the club would doubtless have had a record year. Increased seating accommodation had been provided on the lawn, and money had been expended on a new water-supply, a semaphore and a cloak-room. During the coming year it was intended to make considerable alterations and additions to the ladies’ retiring room,. Early in the past year the Chairman, the Hon E. W. Parker, had, left New Zealand on a visit to England, aid as he had determined to remain permanently at Home he had resigned the position. The Hub rules bad been revised, and a few altertions had been made. The statement of receipts and expenditure was as follows : Receipts.—Balance, April 30, 1898, £223 19s 6d. The Chairman moved the adoption oi the report and balance-sheet. He said that in 1896 the club had distributed the sum of £11,988 Is in stakes, in 1897 £15,110, m 1898 £15,205, and in 1899 £15,215, the progress of the club in recent year? could be judged from those figures. . the club had held races on nine days* durmg the past season, and bad paid away an average of £1690 per day in stakes, whin was between £4OO and £SOO per day more than the net average amountgxveni by any other club in the colony. Then, j£°> Jj® Canterbury Jockey Club was almost the om. metropolitan club that did not make dw 5 per cent deduction from the advertise! stakes, an item that was appreciated by owners, bub was generally overlooked b> the public. He was strongly of opinion time had arrived when this question of deduction from the advertised stakes should be dealt with by the Conference. In the early days, when race meetings, were managed by honorary officers, and a clubs chief °source of revenue ■ was the subscription paid by members, the rcduction was justifiable enough. But now that dtabs drew large revenues from the totalisator, from gate-money, and from entrance fees, the need for the reduction of stakes had passed away. From the last balance-sheet it, would be seen that the club subsidised the. Hunt Clubs to the extent of £502 7s 4d. Tlie' average subsidy paid to Hunt Clubs during the past seven years was £269 2s 9d, and the committee had come to the decision that it would be advisaWe to fe a limit. It had therefore been decided to vote the sum of £250 a year in fufcur ®’ ° be divided in the proportion of three-tilths to the Christchurch Hunt Club and onefifth each to the Brackenfield and Timaru Clubs. Although the subsidy was a dram on the club’s resources, the committee considered that its payment was in the mterests of racing. Tire cllub’s funds had suffered in the past through the invasion at race meetings of bookmakers who laid totahsar "fS, The trustees M. thereto, adopted a new set of by-laws, giving in creased powers to the club, and stringent measures would be taken, at meetings to exclude this undesirable element. With regard to the coming year the Programme Committee had arranged for three days’ racing at the Grand National meeting, and although this was m the nature of an experiment, there was little doubt that it would be . successful. It was intended to put in a hob water-supply for the outside public, and to make additions to the ladies’ rooms. He could not conclude without making reference to the great loss sustained by the club through the resignation from office of the Hon E. W. Parker, who had been chairman for seven years, and whose services had been extremely valuable. , Mr A. Boyle seconded the motion, which was carried. , . The following officers were elected for tne ensuing: year:—St/Gwo-rcis, Ivlessrs A. " Knight, G. F. Martin, B. M. Morten F. H. Pyhe, B. Heaton Rhodes, D. Rutherford, J. Studholme, T. Teschemaker and C. Hood Williams, Sir G. Clifford and the Hon L. Walker; committee, Messro. I. Bassett, A. Boyle, P. Campbell, U. b. Martin, R. M. Morten, G. J- F. F H. Pyne, J. B. Reid, J. B. Studholme, . R D Thomas, C. F. Todbunter and C. , Hood^’Williams’ and Sir G. Clifford. i The following new members were elected: Messrs L. Acland, R. A. Cbaffey, W. S. Cobham, H. G. W. Gray, T. H. Lance, C. K. Meredith-Kave, C. T. Newton, H. F. Nicholl, T. N. Wardrop, J. H. B. Williams and C. P. C. Wilson. The Chairman referred to the practice of numbering the ballot papers sent out to members, which had been adopted in connection with the elecrion of stewards and committee. He explained that such a course was necessary in case a second scrutiny should be demanded, and to keep a check on the voting. The-method of counting the votes, however, made it impossible for the voting to be made known. It was decided + hat the ballot papers for the election of officers should be numbered and initialled by the Secretary and gummed down, and that no duplicate ballot papers should be issued. On the motion of Mr R. M. Morten it , was decided to place on record the club’s appreciation of the services rendered by the late Chairman, the Xlc-n E. W. Parker, . Votes of thanks were accorded to the . auditor and the scrutineers. j A special general meeting of the club ,j was then held, wbw.-the rules-as amended i
