[Per Press Association;] * AUCKLAND, May 25. Constable S. Thompson has been awarded £5 by the Police Department for the gallantry shown by him in rescuing a man who fell into the harbour one dark night some weeks ago. At a meeting of the Grafton Road Wesleyan Church, regarding the Twentieth oenfcury Fund, the sum of £522 was promised during the evening. The new city valuer, Mr Hickling, has returned to the City Council his valuation of city pro|H»riles. The total value returned is £321,260, an increase on last year of £23,849. At the Police Court to-day, Alma Olga Hasen. a. girl aged sixteen, was charged with being an idle and disorderly person. She pleaded guilty to the charge. SubInspector Wilson said that he could do nothing with the accused. She had been taken, charge of . -by. the Salvation ,; Army authorities, but- she Would - not stay , with them. She got in the Door of Hope, where a fire occurred in her bedroom. She was taken to the police station, where she had fits, and her mouth was found full of pins and needles. She was sent to the hospital for a fortnight, and,'after being discharged, the i Salvation Amy again took charge of her, but she did not stay. The girl’s father was! a bootmaker in Wellington, and he had married again. He paid the girl’s passage and she had been in Auckland about one month. The girl had been wandering about the streets at nights. She had been examined by doctors for lunacy, and they said that she was sane. Mr Hutchison said that he would like the girl to be re-examined, and he would remand her for medical treatment. The girl laughed as she went out of the dock.
