MEETINGS OF SOCIETIES.
The monthly meeting of No. 7, Princess of Orange Ladies' Loyal grange Lodge was held on Thursday.. Sistp Allen|was in the chair. One member was initiated into the Order. The Secretary was instructed to send a letter of condolence to a bereaved brother. A vote of thanks was passed to the visiting sisters. After the Lodge closed refreshments were handed round.
A meeting of the Christchurch Prohibition League was held on Friday evening, in the rooms of the Young Men's Christian Association. An open-air meeting was arranged for Saturday, May 27,-and it was decided to invite Mr G. J. Smith, M.H.R., to preside •at the next meeting- of : the • League. the delegates to the convention at Timaru were instructed to convey congratulations and fraternal greetings to the temperance workers of that town. The organising agent was authorised to order 28,000 leaflets for distribution.
The members of the Literary and Debating Society of the Young Men's Christian Association had a very successful evening last night. Mr Newberry read a paper on the progress achieved during the eighteenth century. Mr Y. Fraser followed with a paper on temperance reform. The paper produced keen criticism. The next meeting will take the form of a "social."
