CITY COUNCIL.

An ordinary meeting of the City Council was held last night; present—The Mayor, and Councillors Gray, Samuels, Sandstein, -Appleby, Hamilton, Morris, Loughnan, Kincaid, Sorensen, Payling, J. T. Smith. Andrews and Woods.

Items-of finance were reported as follows: —Debit balance, general account, £10,535 3s lid; cemetery account, credit £1851; loan account, credit £704. The receipts since Hast meeting were: —General account, £7O 15s 8d; cemetery account, £l9 0s 6d; suspense account, £ll lis 9d; loan account, £1 10s 6d; interest account,' £4 12s 6d. The payments were—General account, £609 6s 4d; Richmond loan' account, £s4' 13s 6d; cemetery account, £3 9s 6d; suspense account, £4. The total rates forth© year were £11,299 ; theamount collected was £11,158, and the amount outstanding £7l Bs. The. statement was adopted. Correspondence was react—From Messrs Lake and Evans, asking if the Council was prepared to sell the Fire Brigade site in Lichfield Street. On the motion of Councillor Sandstein, seconded by Councillor Sorensen, it was resolved to reply that the Council had no present intention of selling the land. From Mr W. Collins, stating that on Saturday nighthe hadrmet witha-painful, accident at the corner, of' Tuam Street and the East' Belt; owing -to the insufficient filling in of ground, and that a lady over sixty years of age had suffered from the same cause. He now asked for compensation. On the motion of Councillor Gray, seconded by Councillor Payling, the matter was referred to the Works Committee for reporfc. From the honorary Secretary of the Christcburch Fire Brigade, soliciting the patronage of the Council to a concert in aid of the funds of the Brigade, to be held at the Oddfellows' Hall on June 29. The request was acceded to. Councillor Payling asked if permission had been given to the contractor who was erecting a new building at the junction of Hereford and Manchester Streets to enclose a large portion of the road within his hoarding. The City Surveyor, in reply to the Mayor, said that the by-law provided for one-third of the road being taken* for such a purpose, provided there was no tram-line on the road. The contractor had riot a'third, of the road, and the corner was carefully rounded off. Councillor Sorensen wished to know if sqme temporary site for'a morgue couM not be procured. His Worship said that, while it, would be difficult to procure a temporary morgue, tne city would soon have a permanent morgue when their Bill was passed. Councillor Gray drew attention to the state of Colombo and High Streets, the principal streets of the city, which were at present in bad order. Councillor Samuels answered, on behalf of the Works Committee, that the Tramway Company had been somewhat behind in doing, its share. The committee had decided to asphalt the whole of Colombo and High Streets. Councillor Sorensen wished to call attenr tion to the fact that, on a recent occasion, the upper, door of the Opera House had been locked when there was an audience inside. The Mayor said he would instruct the City Inspector to make the necessary inquiries and report. After accepting a tender for the new Fire I Brigade station the Council rose.
