OBITUARY.
Mr Joseph Lyons, who was a very- old Canterbury settler, died at his son’s residence in Sydney on July 26, at the advanced age of eighty- two years. In his yotlth; Mr Lyons entered the Royal Navy, and came -to . Lyttelton with his mother and wife and family, in the ship Zealandia 1 in the year, 1859, V He was first employed by Messrs Holmes , and Richardson, in the construction of the Lyttelton line,, and; upon the railway being opened, he entered the Goveriuhient employ, and was at different times porter at the Lyttelton and Heathcote stations. He remained in this position until about sixteen years ago, when he retired on account of his advancing age. He then left for Sydney, and has lived there with his son up to the time of his death. He was widely known and respected throughout Canterbury. An old and respected .resident' of Timaru, Mr W. M’KSowu, saddler, passed" away on Thursday evening at the age of sixty. Some months ago he met with an accident, and never thoroughly recovered; from it. Mr M’Keown came to Timaru about thirty years ago, from Central Otago, and, 'being a careful man of business, he prospered weD. He leaves a widow arid 1 six grown-up children.
