BOROUGH COUNCIL.

SYDENHAM. A meeting of the Sydenham Borough Council was held last evening; present— The Mayor (Mr J. Forrester), and Councillors Murray, Halley, Taylor, Hadfield, Jacques, Muffett, Hirtzell, Manlike, Bell, Cutler and Large. The Finance Comxmtee reported receipts during the past fortnight to have been £77 18s lid, and recommended payment of accounts amounting to <£4B 6s 2d. The balances of accounts were as follows: -Credit—Separate trusts account, £27 6s Id; interest account, .£567 11s; loan account, <£4897 10s 2d, making a total of £5492 7s 3d. Debit —General account, £3277 7s 2d. The committee also recommended that all defaulting ratepayers who have not applied for further time for payment, should be sued forthwith. The report was adopted. Correspondence was read from the Charitable Aid Board, informing the Council that its share of the contribution to Charitable Aid institutions other than hospitals for the year ending May 1, 1899, had been fixed at £2lO 3s. The letter was received. From the Heathcote Eoad Board, stating that Mr Macdonald had offered a strip of land 33ft wide for the widening of Tennyson Street ,and asking whether the Council would bear half the cost of its construction. It was resolved that the Council approved of the widening of the road on the terms mentioned in the letter, but as the land was outside the Sydenham boundary it would not hold itself responsible for any expenses incurred in the formation. From the Canterbury Rugby Union, stating that it had gone fully into the subject, and selected a fair proportion of matches for Sydenham that were likely to draw the public. The Union stated the terms on which it had the use of Lancaster Park, and asked for similar terms for the Sydenham Park. It was resolved that the letter should be received, and the offer accepted, the Council to find the gatekeepers. A letter from the Spreydon Bead Board was received. Prom Mr H. Wylie, extending an invitation to the individual members of the Council to attend a public meeting on April 22, in the Oddfellows’ Hali, Lincoln Eoad, to protest against the proposed establishment of public slaughterhouses in the vicinity of the Addington Kaleyards. The letter was received and the invitation accepted. The Works Committee recommended

that, the tender of Mr Brightling for the (Travelling of Mowbray and Palsgrave Streets should be accepted. The recommendation was adopted.
