ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
DROWNED WHILE BATHING. U ited Press Association—By Electric TelegraphCopyright. SYDNEY, April 16. The Misses White, nieces of the late Hon James White, were bathing at Armidale, when the younger one got out of her depth, and the elder was drowned in a heroic attempt to save her. The coachman saved the younger girl. As the tram was coming down from Papanui about five o’clock on Saturday evening, and when close to Mr Unwin’s corn store, the engine came into collision with a lad on a bicycle. It appears that the cyclist was meeting the tram, and in endeavouring to get out of the way of it something went wrong with his steering gear, with the result that he ran right into the engine. The concussion fortunately threw the hoy clear of the line, and the driver pulled the motor up so quickly that but little damage was done to the machine. The cyclist was fortunate enough to escape with a few bruises.
