WELLINGTON ITEMS.
[From Our Correspondent.J WELLINGTON. April 15. I have been informed that in the speech which he made at Auckland, the Premier, as Colonial Treasurer, gave some interesting particulars concerning the financial results of the year. Those particulars, however, did not appear in the telegraphic reports of the speech, but I have been able to gather some of the details from a reliable source. The expenditure for the year was approximately from £4,625,000 to ,£'4,650,000 plus £300,000 transferred to the Public Works fund, and the year’s surpluses have been approximately as follows —Customs, £55,000; stamps, £49,000; land and income tax, £17,000; railways, £91,000; beer tax, £6000; territorial revenue, £12,000; post and telegraph, £16,000; miscellaneous, £67,000; under other heads, £IBB,OOO. . I have been told by the Chairman of the Conciliation Board that the Board has drawn up an entirely new log. which it is believed will be accepted by both parties to the tailoresses’ dispute. A portion of the plant for manufacturing the oil gas which is required to light the railway carriages on the Wellington-Napier section has arrived, and a beginning is to be made to erect it. The gas is to be manufactured from crude petroleum, a fact which may interest those who are connected with the oil finds at Cheviot.
