OBITUARY.
MAJOR KEMP. [Per Press Association.] WANGANUI. April 15. Major Kemp, the famous Maori chief of Wanganui, died at the Putiki pah close to town this morning. He had been ailing for a fortnight with bronchitis and rheumatism. His age was seventy-five. The deceased was one of the most powerful allies during the native troubles in the early days, and was the holder of the New Zealand cross and medal, and was presented by the Queen with a sword for conspicuous bravery and the valuable assistance that he rendered.
KAIKOURA, April 15. Captain Davidson, an old resident, died this morning. He was a member of the Franklin Arctic expedition, and one of the two who first traced the expedition. The deceased, whose age was sixty-nine, was highly respected.
