THE WAKATIPU-LAIRA COLLISION.
[Pee Peess Association.] DUNEDIN, April 14
The taking of evidence in the WakalbipuLaira collision was continued to-day. Captain Skene, master of the Priestman crane dredge, and Petersen, engine-driver, thought that the Wakatipu was travelling about four knots when the collision occurred. The evidence of John Paterson, owner of the Laira, referred to the value of the vessel, and the insurance. James Watt, quarter-piaster on the Wakatipu, said that he did not think that the speed was more than two or two and a half knots. He attributed the bad steering of the Wakatipu to insufficiency of water. Except when wind and tide were with her, the Wakatipu was a first-class steering vessel. The helm was hard to starboard when the collision occurred. Archibald Boyd, carpenter of the Wakatipu, deposed that he was at the windlass prepared to droo the anchor, in coming up. There were altogether four men standing by. James White, lamp trimmer, gave corroborative evidence. The inquiry was adjourned till next day..
