THE CHAIR OP ENGLISH LITERATURE. At the meeting of the Canterbury College Board of Governors yesterday the foillowing report of the College Committee was adopted :— The committee recommends the following resolutions for adoption by the Board in connection with the appointment of a professor of English language, literature andhistory, intheplace of Professor Mathew, resigned:—l. That the subjects attached to the chair be English language, literature and history. 2. That the salary be .£6(O per annum, without fees. 3. That twelve months’ notice be required in writing on either side. 4. That applications for tlte position be invited in Great Britain and the Australasian colonies, -fr. That applications received in Great Britain, be transmitted through the Agent-Genera,! tO'the Registrar of . the, [College; •to -‘be in i the hands of the latter by Sept,,-L * 8.-.Tluit applications received in the colonies be sent to the Registrar of the College direct, to be in the hands of the latter by Sept.,l. 7. That in the event of the candidate .selected being a resident in Great Britain, and being a married man, the sum of £2120 be allowed for passage money ; if a single man £BO to be allowed. 8. The gentleman selected to arrive in Christchurch nob later than Peb. 15, 1899. 9. That the salary of the new professor commence from the date of his arrival in Christchurch. 10. That no residence be provided for the professor, nor any allowance in lieu thereof, 11. That the gentleman appointed devote the whole of his time to the of his Chair. 12. That he be in all things subject to the direction and regulations laid down by the Board. 13. That if the position is. resigned within three years from the date of appointment the amount expended for passage money be refunded. 14. That in the event of the person aippointed being guilty of conduct unbecoming his position, or being unable to discharge the duties of the - or wilfully neglecting to observe the,, terms of his agreement, the engagement' "may' be terminated * .
