LAWN TENNIS.

A team from the Sydenham Tennis Club played a match on Saturday against the Woolston Club on the court of the latter, and after some interesting play the visitors won by eight games. The following are the results of the sets:— Ladies’ Singles—Miaa Blackwell (S.) beat Miss Durosc (W.), G-2; Mias Manifold (W.) beat Miss Munclay (S.), 6-2. Combined .Doubles—Miss Blackwell and Endd (S.) beat Miss Duroso.and Baxter, 6-2; Miss Manifold and Dryden (W.) beat Miss L. Muhday and C. Lyttelton, 6-3. Gentlemen’s Doubles—Eudd and Joll (8.) beat Baxter and Bennington, 6-0; Gee and Lyttelton (S.) beat Dryden and Kinvig, 6-4. Gentlemen’s Singles—Gee (S.) beat Dryden, 0-1; Baxter (W.) beat Joll, 6-4, Ladies’ Doubles—Misses Manifold and Meadows (W.) beat Misses Munday, 6-2, Total, Sydenham 41 games, Woolston 33 games.

A meeting of the Match Committee of the Sydenham Tennis Club was held on Friday last, when it was decided to play both ladies’ and gentlemen’s handicap tournaments for the trophies presented by Mr Pannell. The first round will close on Monday, April 4. A meeting ■will he held in the Wesleyan Schoolroom, East Belt, this evening, at eight o’clock, for the purpose of forming a new lawn tennis club, to be situated within the north-eastern quarter of the city. The promoters already have promises of over seventy intending members. It is understood that it is intended to secure a piece of land largo enough for five or six courts, and that a suitable site is under consideration. The intending members are at present about equally divided between Thursday and Saturday players, so that there is no fear of the courts being overcrowded on any particular afternoon.
