A departmental inquiry into the circumstances of the accident which nearly resulted in the derailing of an excursion train near Pahiatna, on the occasion of the opening of the Woodville railway, is to be held.

A man named James Fenton attempted to commit suicide yesterday by swallowing a quantity of match-heads. He was taken to the hospital, where he was brought round.

The Times understands that a Royal Commission is to be appointed to investigate the condition of the kauri gum industry north of Auckland, and especially the subject of contract labour. The commissioners wiH be Mr Mueller, Commissioner of Crown Lands, Auckland, and Mr Tregear, Secretary of the Labour Department.

Mr C. D. Barraud, a well-known and widely-esteemed citizen, is dead. His was due to a severe attack of influenza.
