According to a notice in the Gazette, the President and members of the Arbitration Court are to be paid two guineas per day while absent from their place of residence, and the Chairman and members of the Conciliation Boards one guinea for each day’s sitting and 41 10s when absent from home. Travelling fares will also be allowed. These rates are to date back to Oct. 31 last year. April 12 is fixed .as tho day for the first election of the Council of the New Zealand Law Society. The arrivals in the colony in February were 1612, and tho departures 1781. In February last year tho figures were 1410 and 1781. The departures, curiously enough, are identical in both instances. New telephone regulations and scale of charges are gazetted, and come into force on April L The Department now takes power to refuse to connect any place used for illegal, immoral or improper purposes, and a new regulation provides against strangers being allowed the use of telephones. Tho rates are raised to £7 for business and 45 for private houses where tho exchange is open continuously, and 45 where it is only open during fixed hours. The additional char-go for mileage is altered from 41 par mile or a fraction thereof, to 10s per quarter-mile or fraction. When any connection is over a mile the applicant will be required to bold it for three years. For connections over three miles subscribers will be required to pay for the erection of the additional line, and 41 for each quartermile as maintenance.
