SPORTING.

WELLINGTON RACING CLUB. [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, Nov. 21. Perfect weather was experienced for the opening day of the Wellington Racing Club’s Spring Meeting, and a couple of heavy showers which fell during the previous night had rendered everything about the course bright and pleasant to the eye. The attendance was large, but not up to expectations. Visitors were there in large numbers, but the Wellington public were not so numerous as usual. This was, no doubt, due to the fact that there have already been two holidays this week —one for the opening day of the exhibition and the other for the agricultural and pastoral Show. The racing was of an interesting character, and the only thing to mar the day’s pleasure was the unfortunate accident in the principal handicap and the injury to Gallagher. Speculation was brisk, and the sura of =67397 was put through the totalisa, tor, as against .£4703 on the first day of the corresponding meeting last year. The following are details of the racing:—

THE NOVEMBER HANDICAP, of 75 sots ; the second horse JO sovs from the state. One nnle. 1-4 r-i r T. H. Lowry's b h Orion's Belt, by Castor—Bangle, 4yrs, 6st 111 b (Noble) 1 124 Mr W. Porepo immediately took command, followed by Orion’s Belt and Kingsrnan, but nearing the road Orion’s Belt cut down Porepo /and went on with a lead of three or four lengths. This he maintained to the entrance to the straight, where Porepo was done with, and Leda and Blarney went in pursuit of Orion’s Belt, who had to be shaken up to win by two lengths. Time—lmin 45sec. Much the same order was maintained under the hill, but racing along the back stretch Strathbraan retired and. Errand Boy again went up second, although he was four or five lengths behind the leader, who was apparently going well within herself. Nearing the road Acone commenced to move up, and several others, including Mahaki and Eangipuhi, were improving their positions. At the turn into the straight Armilla was three lengths in front of Errand Boy. Here Acone, who was coming fast, fell, and brought down Elaneur and Douglas, while Eangipuhi stumbled and unseated his rider.
