THE WEATHER.
Our Ashburton correspondent writes ; The weather at Ashburton yesterday was wet and stormy, heavy rain falling most of the day near the hills. The rivers were in flood, and were still rising. There was no appearance of a change last night. The rain was heavy and almost continuous during Monday night throughout North Canterbury, and at nine o’clock yesterday morning the weather was worse if anything. The rain being from the east, the rivers were getting up. Our Kaiapoi correspondent writes : —The weather in the Kaiapoi district has been a succession of rain since Saturday evening, almost without a single break. This has been the means of preventing farming and gardening operations being pushed on, as the land in many instances is much too soft. Much water is to be seen on the low-lying sections. The downfall has apparently been too steady to cause any fear from the rivers. Farmers are anxiously hoping for a speedy clearance.
