[Per Press association. I - - OTAGO v. TARANAKI." HAWERA, Sept. 1. The football match Otago v. Taranaki was won by Taranaki by eight points to six. The game was most stubbornly contested. Taranaki did not play up to the form i shown against Wellington, and during the first 'Spell Watson, their best forward, injured his collarbone, and though he resumed play after a time, he was practically useless. Bayly and 11. Good also got a severe shaking through colliding,, and afterwards were not seen to great advantage. Otago played a splendid game throughout. ■ Their style of playing without wings seemed to nonpluss Taranaki. Duncan, for Otago, played a magnificent game, and probably the best back game on the ground. WELLINGTON. Sept. 1. St Patrick’s College beat Christchurch Boys’ High School by nineteen points to three. CANTERBURY RUGBY UNION. The , monthly general meeting of the Canterbui’y Rugby Union was hold last evening at the Clarendon Hotel. There was a fair attendance of delegates, and Mr G. H, Mason occupied the chair. A letter was read from the Secretary of the Southland Union thanking the local Union for the hospitality extended to the Southlanders during their stay in Christchurch. Mr Allard asked for an explanation why the Committee of the Union overrode the decision of the general meeting regarding sending a member of the Selection Committee with the Canterbury team on its late northern tour. The Chairman stated that there was no explanation available
beyond the supposition that the Committee considered the step unnecessary. Mr Allard moved—“ That the Canterbury Rugby Union place on record its high appreciation of the valuable services rendered by the Selection Committee in carrying out their duties in such a satisfactory manner.” Mr Leach seconded this motion, which was earned, and the meeting closed. A meeting of the Committee was held afterwards; present—Messrs G. H. Mason (chairman), J. Daniels (acting honorary secretary), T. M. Buntin, H. Frost and F. T. Evans. A letter was read from the Okain’s Bay Club asking permission to play Carr and Butler —two members of the Christchurch Albion Club—against A karoa. The permission was refused. A telegram was read from the Otago, Eugby U nion expressing a preference for Mr F. T. Evans as referee in the' late match between the two provinces. A. letter was received thanking the Union for granting free passes to last Saturday’s game to a number of boys, inmates: of the Institute for Deaf Mutes. A question from Sefton relating to an intricate point of law in a game there was referred to the Appeal Committee of the New Zealand Eugby Union. The.Kowai Football Club wrote, asking permission from the Union to form a District Association to regulate and promote the game in the northern district. It was decided to defer consideration of the matter. Mr J. Nixon was appointed referee for the match on Thursday between Kofcalutanga and Sydenham, and after a desultory conversation concerning the internal working of the Union, it was decided to adjourn until Friday, at 5 p.m., when a larger committee would be in attendance.
