FIRE
TPer Press Association.] ■■ DUNEDIN, August 31
A fire was discovered at 6.30 pan. on Saturday in the card-box manufacturing department of the Evening Star Company. The fire broke out in the top storey at the north end, apparently in the dressing-room used by the girls. The. flames were promptly extinguished. A good deal of damage, which cannot at present be estimated, was done, but it is considerably within the insurances. The damage caused by the burning was not very considerable, although a portion of the roof of the building was destroyed ; but a good deal of the stock was injured by water, especially in the bookbinding department, which is beneath the card-box factory. The fire, presumably, had smouldered from one o’clock, when the premises were closed, Mr Thomson, the foreman, being the last to leave. The flames had a good hold when the brigade was summoned. The building is insured in the Eoyal Exchange, and the I stock in the South British office. The dam .go is estimated at .£SOO.
