CHRISTCHURCH. Friday, Oct. 25. (Before Hr H. S. Wardell, S.M.) Alleged Theft. —John Rountree, an old man, was charged with having on Oct, It committed theft by fraudulently converting to his own use a purse containing three .£1 notes. The evidence showed that on the date in question Annie Woodham had lost a purse containing £3 in the Caledonian Road. The accused had bscn walking behind her, and had been asked if he had picked up the purse, but had denied it. Constable Stunner went to his house in the evening, and on searching bis clothes found the purse, two £1 notes and 14a in silver. Constable Flewellen stated that he knew the accused, who was nearly eighty years of age, and whose mind was failing. He had always borno a good character. The deficiency of 6a having been paid, the accused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon. Miscellaneous.— William M. Jones, a small boy, for whom Mr Joynt appeared, was charged with having, on Sept. 5, thrown a stone to the danger of a passer-by. The boy was discharged with a caution,—An adjourned case against Harriet Pinnioa (for whom Mr M'Cotmell appeared), charged under the Infants* Life Protection Act with having kept a child in an unregistered bouse, was dismissed, the woman having since registered. —Angelo Bastisn, for hawking without a license in the Borough of Linwoqd was fined 20s and costs.—James Parkis, for allowing two horses to graze on the road, was fined 10s and costs. Robert Niven and William Hill, for allowing horses to graze on the road, were each fined ,5s and costs. John Owen, for allowing cattle, horses and sheep to graze on the road, was fined 6s, with costs 21s.— Robert W. England was fined 20s‘and costa for driving over the croacing of Cashel and Colombo Streets at other than a walking pace.—Elizabeth Martin was fined 20s for allowing her chimney to catch on fire on Oct. 17.—A case against Sydney Neate, charged with leaving his horse and vehicle unattended was ’ dismissed. Breach ok ' the Peace, —Warahiko Ngawiatu and Edward Brosnahau were charged with fighting in High Street on Oct, 19. After the evidence had been heard. Brosnahnn was fined 40s and costs, amt Ngawiatu 10s and coct.'. Civil Case. —P. C. Raphael v. Mrs E. A. Lewis, claim £l2 2a Gi on promissory note endorsed by defendant. Mr H. J. R >phaal appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr M’Connel for the defendant. The case had been heard the previous day, and judgment was now gi/en for the plaintiff.
