ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

A very serious accident happened yesterday to Arthur Morris, aged eight years, a son of Mr C. B. Morris, traveller for Messrs Wood, Shand and Co. It appears that in the absence of his parents the boy was playing with an old powder flask which was about half full of powder. By soma means the powder exploded, and a piece of the flask became embedded in the boy’s face. Ha was at once taken to the hospital, where hia injuries were attended to by Dr Fenwick, assisted by Hr Murdoch. To remove the piece of flask the right eye had to be taken out and part of the cheekbone and jaw cut away. The operation was a very delicate one, and the boy was progressing as favourably as could be expected late last night. A lad named Martin Ellesmere, whilst olaying cricket at the West Christchurch school yesterday afternoon, was struck on the head by one of the stumps, which was knocked out of the ground by a fast ball. The head-master, Mr T. S. Poster, at once had him conveyed to the hospital, where he was found to ba suffering from a severe i scalp wound. A young man named W\ J. Cook was received into the hospital yesterday afternoon suffering from injuries to one of his hands through its being crushed in the belt of a machine.
