GONERNORS' SALARIES.
[Special to Press Association.] ADELAIDE, July 12. The correspondence which has passed between Lord Ripon and Mr Kingston in reference to the proposed reduction of the Governor’s salary by £IOOO, or, including allowances, £2OOO, is now published. Lord Ripon, in replying to Mr Kingston, suggests the possibility- of making the proposals more consistent with the dignity of the representative of so important a colony, and that it would be better to allow South Australia to cease to be recognised as a first-class colony than impose on the Governor indefinite expenses and social responsibilities so heavy that with the reduced salary he will be unable to bear them, Mr Kingston, in a letter closing the correspondence, says ministers are convinced that the present vice-regal salary and emoluments are more than adequate, and that if the expenditure exceeds the remuneration it will be caused by unnecessarily lavish entertaining. The people contemplate the reductions with more than equanimity. The various absences of Governors that have lately occurred have established the fact that the affairs of the colony can be faithfully administered, and the vice-regal obligations duly discharged, by a gentleman drawing only half the usual salary.
