[Per Pbkss Association.! WELLINGTON, July 12, There are 1150 entries for the Pigeon Show next week, representing over 1200 birds. In the Magistrate’s Court to - day, Valentine Verne, who has been before the Court on other charges, was charged with false pretences. Mr Joyce, M.H.R., and Mr Treadwell, Wellington, gave evidence that Verne approached them representing himself as being named Charles Wiuward, and being entitled to a legacy left by his father in England. The suggestion for the prosecution was that Verne, seeing an advertisement stating that C. Winwatd was entitled to money owing to the death of his father in England, personated Winward, and got a lawyer to write to England for the money. Evidence was given that Verne attempted to borrow various sums of money from several witnesses in order to cable to England for advances. With the permission of the Bench a charge of endeavouring to obtain money from the English executors of the will of E. Winward, by falsely representing himself to be Charles Winward, was added. Verne was committed for trial on both charges.
