{Special to Press Association.] TRADE WITH CANADA. SYDNEY, July 12, The Telegraph, commenting: on Mr Ward’s statement at Auckland that there was reasonable prospect of as great a trade with Canada as with Australia, remarks : —“ The fact is, Canada takes very little from the colonies, even with the Canadian service now running. Theye is as much chance of New Zealand carrying on an interchange equivalent to that of Australia with Canada, as there is with Chili os Peru.” FEDERAL BANK. MELBOURNE, July 12. The liquidator of the Federal Bank has made an affidavit, showing that the debts still due amount to £1,254,000, exclusive of winding-up charges. The assets, apart from the money due by contributories, will not exceed- £711,000. He does not expect to realise above £50,000 from the call now sanctioned. FRAUDULENT TRADING. Owing to physical prostration the Abrahams, convicted of fraudulent trading, are still unable to come up for sentence. Two of them have persistently refused food and stimulants, and ace suffering from partial paralysis of the brain. ADVANCES TO SETTLERS. ADELAIDE, July 12. The Government has introduced a State Advances Bill, which is practically the same as last year’s measure. PETROLEUM. The Government geologist reports unfavourably on the petroleum discovery. SMALL-POX The Lusitania has arrived and beenplaced in quarantine. Another case of small-pox has developed since the steamer left Albany. WOMEN CANDIDATES. The Engineers’ Association baa nominated Misses Hawkins and Prohan, nurses recently dismissed from the. Adelaide Hospital, as candidates at the coming elections.
