THE AUCKLAND SEAT.

TPeb Press Association.! ■ AUCKLAND, Ju£t 11, The Women’s Christian Temperance Union will support Mr Monk’s candidature for the city. A meeting of the Central Council was held to-night. There was a full attendance, only three delegates being absent. Mr H, Wilding occupied the chair. The Press was excluded. The meeting is described as remarkably lively, n[ith scenes and recriminations. It is stated that a lengthy telegram from the Premier was read, urging a settlement, and stating that unless such was come to Mr Monk would go in, and asking if a Minister should come up and heal the breach. The telegram was laid on the table. Mr Mahon proposed an adjournment, to admit of a settlement being come to. Several members blamed Mr Beehan for having published the Premier’s telegram. Mr Beehan said that he had done so in accordance with a precedent. He said that Mr Wilding had asked the Premier for instructions, and the telegram he received was an answer, and a copy of one sent to Mr Wilding, which had never been laid before the Council. Mr Wilding said that there had been no opportunity, to lay the telegram before the Council till to-night, as the delegates would have to consult the bodies : they represented. On the defeat of the , motion for adjournment Mr Beehan tendered his resignation as secretary,, and with two other members of the Liberal Association left the meeting. At 9.30 an urgent telegram was read from the Minister of Labour again urging that a Minister should come up and try to heal the breach. This request was not acceded to, and Mr Pawcus was selected as Labour candidate by twenty-two to two. A committee was appointed to draw up a manifesto.

At a meeting of the Progressive Liberal Association last sight, it was resolved—- “ That this Association regrets the action of the Ministry in putting forward Mr T. Thompson as a Candidate for Auckland* as an unwarrantable interference with the rights of the electors, and vie we with satisfaction the steps taken by the electors to assert their rights.”
