FINANCIAL RETURNS.

UNAUTHORISED EXPENDITURE. [from OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.! WELLINGTON. Jultlh. The unauthorised expenditure account, one of the returns for which members have been clamouring, and which was laid on the table of the House to-day by the Hon J. G. Ward, shows that the appropriations chargeable to the Consolidated Fund were exceeded by .£18,133, as compared with £9726 last year and £30.495 in 1893.- The Public Works Fund wan exceeded by £B3O, as compared with £1835 last year and £11,149 ia 1893. Services not provided for under the Government Life Insurance De. partment amounted to £205, compared with £206 last year and £340 in 1893, services ; not provided for in connection with the 1 Public Trust Office amounted to £1685, as ’ compared with £315 last year and £2743 in 1893. The total amonnt of unauthorised expenditure was £20,353, compared with £11,583 last year and £33,727 in 1893. The sum of £213, in addition to £IOOO charged under the Ministers’ Salaries and Allowance Act, appears in the unauthorised ■ expenditure account under the heading Ministers’ travelling allowances. The cost of the shipment of timber sent to England by the Industries and Commerce Department was, including insurance, £534, and the freight thereon was £368.

The following expenses in connection with the Tariff Commission, amounting, to £174 8s sd, appear in the unauthorised expenditure account Salary ot secretary to Feb. 28, £l3 10aj travelling expenses, £lO4 12s; reporters, £26 19a 6d; advertising, £26 6s lid; messengers, £3, In connection with the wreck of the the Police Department waa put to the following expense Charter of steamer £ll4, expenses incurred by the , police at the scene of the wreck £99 Is 4d, payments made to Maoris and others £63 . 16s, total £276 17s 3d. In addition to this there was a grant of £IOO in aid of the shipwrecked passengers and crew of the Wairarapa. The appropriation account shows that the sum of £2,251,825 was voted under the Consolidated Fund. Soma of the votes were unissued to the extent of £59,245, and in the case of other votes, the sum of £18,138 was issued in excess. The sum of £2IOO was voted under the State forest account, of which ,£2077 was unissued. Under the Cheviot estate account the total amount voted was £13,555, of which £7OOO was unissued. Under Part I. of the Public Works Fund £578,530 was voted, of which £230,926 is unissued. Under Part 11. £75.173 was voted, of which £20,078 is unissued. Under the Lands Improvement Account, £166,945 was voted, of which £67,013 was unissued. The amount voted under the Native Lands Purchase Account was £150,000, of which £44,711 was unissued.
