NEW MODE OF DRESSCUTTING.

A comparatively new ,sj ; stsm of dresscutting, by means of the Columbia Filter, waa carefully and minutely deccribed by its agent, Mr F. Powell, to a largo audience of ladies, at the Art Gsliejy, yesterday afternoon. After pointing out the drawbacks arising from the complexity of the usual methods of scientific dress-cutting, the lecturer referred to the simplicity of the system die teught, as being, one of-its chief merits. Thu chart the Columbia fitter consists of five pisesa of pasteboard, which are marked by numbers. Iu order to use these, certain measurements are taken from the figure, and a dot is made on the material so aa to correspond with the same nlimber on the fitter. The next point is found in a similar way, and then the connecting curve or line, as the caso maybe, is obtained by drawing a pencil along tho edge of the fitter. It was also shown that no paper pattern was necessary, as the markings could be made directly on to the lining, while there need not bo the slightest guesswork or refitting. A special feature of the’chart ia tins non-dopeadenca of any one measurement upon another; each is absolutely independent, and tha chart has been so accurately constructed that all tho parts must fit together. Tho method of fitting ’a round-shouldered figure was explained, as well as the scientific mode of arranging the French bias—tho Cut which brings the material on the bias under tho arm. The exposition was illustrated by means of a blackboard, and at its doss tho lecturer drafted eft soma patterns for a number of ladies in practical illustration of his method.
