THE HALF-HOLIDAY QUESTION.
[Fee Feebs Aesocxaion.l AUCKLAND, May 11. Tba Mayor of to-day received a telegram from the Hon W. P. Reeves, asking if notice bad been given of the intention to fix a day for tho weekly halfholiday for shopkeepers. The Mayor telegraphed back tb&t this had not been done, whereupon Mr Beeves telegraphed suggesting that the Mayor should fix a day. The Mayor declined to do this, but will leave it to the public meeting of the burgesses of Oaehuaga to fix a day for the weekly half-holiday. This afternoon most of the shops in the Earangahape Eoad were open as usual, and the ordinary amount of business appeared to be doing. In Queen Street, however, the majority of the business establishments were closed. During the afternoon Inspector Fergussoa made a round of tho shops ia Queen Street, Karangahapa Eoad and Fousonby, and took a note of the establishments open.
