J [Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, March 5. At the quarterly meeting of the Waipa Licensing Committee, the transfer of the license of the Travellers’ Beat from Aidmore to Frankton Junction was applied for. A memorial was lodged objecting to the granting of the license, and the Eev Mr Matthew and others appeared personally to object. The license was granted, the Chaisman being the only dissentient, and the committee shifted the license five miles from the original house; but the number of licenses was not increased. Great interest was taken in the case. Last year an attempt was made to shift the license to another part of the district, but a number of settlers opposed the application successfully. The scheme for working the deep level at Thames submitted hy Mr C. A. Harris was considered at a special meeting of the Thames Drainage Board, and after discussion it was resolved “ That the Thames Drainage Board, while desirous of assisting in the development of deep levels at Thames, feels that any action in that direction should be under an agreement with tho companies interested, and it will afford the Board great pleasure to co-operate in carrying out any arrangement which may bo arrived at between Mr Harris and the companies.” Mr C. E. Button, M.H.E., addressed the electors of the city of Auckland, in tho City Hall to-night, on the legislation of last session. The Mayor presided, aud there was a large attendance. Mr Button reviewed tho legislation of the session at some length, and condemned borrowing and much of the labour legislation. He said if Mr Eaovoe carried out hia throat of bringing in more Bills in that direction it would be tho ruin of the country. Labour should be content for a while, and not frighten away capital. He considered that tho Attorney-General had acted wrongly in not issuing a fiat relating to the Shop Hours Act. He received a vote of thanks and confidence.
