TICTORIA RACING CLUB. Second Dat. [Special to Press Association.! MELBOURNE, March 5. Steady support was accorded to Havoc last night for the Australian Cup, which eventually brought him on equal terms with Preston at 100 to 20, J 62000 being secured about tho St Loger winner at those odds. Donation was also well backed, 1700 to 180 being taken in two hands, closing at 100 to 12 (off). Sternchaser was at similar odds. Close upon .£3OOO was accepted about Straight Fire at 100 to 8, and 9000 to 90 was taken about Idolater. The Harvester was quite friendless, offers of 100 to 10 meeting with no response. For the second day of the Tictoiia Racing Club’s Autumn Meeting moat disagreeable weather was experienced. A hurricane of wind blew clouds of dust over the course until towards the close of the day. Tho attendance was terribly meagre, but speculation was very spirited. The Maiden Stakes was a mere fiasco, only Mr S. Millet’s colt Leeway tackling Maroon. The followers of the Mill Parkes stable supported Leeway so stoutly that although the bookmakers demanded edds of 2 to 1 about Maroon, they would not lay more than 5 to 4 about Leeway at the close. The supporters of Mr W. R. Wilson’s stable sent Havoc out a pronounced favourite for the Australian Cup, and he won handsomely. The forward position of The Harvester at the finish, proved beyond doubt that had Cook not been so kind to the Derby winner last week, the double, St Leger and Australian Cup, was fairly within hio grasp. The Messrs Miller were; very confident about Preston's chance, but the gale of wind blowing right down the straight completely settled the little son of Robinson Crusoe, who finished sixth. Havoc’s victory was very popular. Sternchasor ran disappointingly, and curled up towards the finish. The following are details of the racing:— MAIDEN STAKES, of 200 soys; second horse 40 eovs from tho stake. For two-year-olds and up- • wards. Special weights. One mile and a quarter. Mr W. Havoc jumped away with the lead, followed by Sternchaser, lalanthus, Straightfire, Preston and Strahan in the order named, the last two being The Harvester and Pilot Boy. Entering the straight the first time, Straightfire was loading just in front of Strahan, Sternchaser, Apsley, Idolater and Havoc, whilst The Harvester was still last, but this lime accompanied by Bonnie Scotland. Racing along by tho river, Wyvern took charge, followed by Preston, Strahan, Idolater, Straightfire, Sternchaser and Havoc, with The Harvester still racing in the rear. Passing the abattoirs six furlongs from home. Donation was in the van, his nearest attendants being Preston, Idolater, ‘ Starnchaser, lalanthus, Strahan and Straightfire, with Havoa coming fast. Idolater was the first to enter tho straight, with Havoc in hot pursuit, after whom came Sternchaser, Preston and Donation, whilst The Harvester was seen threading his way through from the extreme near. Once their heads were turned for home Havoc took command, and running on strongly won by two lengths from Donation, who came with a great run from the distance post, and was followed in turn by The Harvester, who was fairly lapping the leaders in the last hundred yards, finishing a length behind Donation.
