Charles Murdoch, a middle-aged man. haa been committed for trial for a criminal assault at TVoodend, on hia niece, a girl of eighteen years. The evidence showed that the accused came to the house about midnight on Saturday. The parents of the girl wore absent, and being refused admission, ho burst a window open and committed the alleged offence. Mr John Eussoll, a well-known importer of draught stock,-and a judge at the Agricultural and Pastoral Shows in the South Island, died yester-day, aged fiffcyeif»ht. He had been suffering for some months from an internal disease. The newly-formed Burns Club held its first celebration of the anniversary of the poet’s birth to-night. The speakers wore the Eev J. Anderson, Mr Gardner (Bluff), and Mr G. Deuaiston. There -was. a good, attendance. 1
