WELLINGTON ITEMS.
[Pee Pbess Association.] WELLINGTON, Oct. 19. The Trades Council rejected a motion that tbe present time is inopportune for proposing an increase in Ministers’ salaries. x The Government has offered Mrs Wallis, whose husband was murdered at Tophouse, the position of postmistress. In order to. most the deficiency the Synod decided to devote the offertories on one Sunday in November to the General Fund, and also to issue a circular explaining the financial position and the need of a special effort to equalise the finances. The committee appointed to look into the matter considered that the present position had been brought about by want of organisation, and could see no hope of amendment unless funds were provided to enable the Secretary to devote his whole time to the Church Fund. It is understood that the Evening Press will cease publication at the end of this month; also, that the Herald, a weekly paper, published here for some years, is likely to stop.
