SPORTING.

| [Special to Fbxss Association.]! VIENNA, Oct. 19. The Jockey Club of Vienna has bought the racehorse Matchbox for .£IB,OOO. MELBOURNE, Oct. 19.

All the sporting writers tip Malachite to win the Maiden Plate at Caulfield tomorrow. The other places are divided between Maroon, Dryden and Novelette. For the Nursery Handicap, in which Bob Ray has been scratched, opinions are divided between Bluecup, The Parisienne and Birksgate. For the Caulfield Cup the Australasian selects Brilliant, Straightfire, Lady Trenton. The Leader takes Ruenalf or Brilliant to win, and Capstan, Paris, or Straightfire to fill the places. The Sportsman selects Elswiok, Theodore, Tim Swiveller, or Paris, in the order named. The Weekly Times takes Bruin, Straightfire, Theodore or Brilliant. For the Windsor Handicap, the Australasian selects Moorite, Alec. Taylor’s best, or Euroka. The Leader selects Idolater, Destiny, or Atlas. The Sportsman places Radoo, Euroka, or Outcast. The Weelcly Times takes Fragment, Salient or Scrip. The following wagers have been accepted about the Caulfield Cup:— 1000 to 110 agst Bruin. 8000 to 210 agat Brilliant. 900 to 63 agst Straightfire, 2500 to 100 agst Chesterman, 300 to 9 agst Isaac. 100 to 4 was on offer agst Ruenalf. .

Betting was stagnant during the day, owing to the Bradshaw Benefit Meeting. Ruenalf will be scratched in the morning, aa sufficient inducement is not offered to start him for the Caulfield Cup. Mr Keys is very confident of winning the Melbourne Cup with him. The admirers of Bruin, Havoc, Straight-fire, Elowick and Lady Trenton are equally sanguine about their favourites winning the big event tomorrow, whilst Carmody’s friends main-/ tain that the rank outsider Strahan should certainly win if ho runs'up to hia true form. Shotholt, not First Shot, has been scratched for the Melbourne Cup. The rooms iu Eourke Street were crowded to-night. Bruin was well backed at 100 to 11, and Lady Trenton and Straightfire at 100 to. 8- It is rumoured that there is a commission in the market to back Elswick, but if so it was not executed up till the time the cable closed.
