-■ [PebTrebr Association.] 'AUCKLAND, April 4, Robert Garrett, a gnm merchant and ja prominent citizen, was found dead this morning at Otahuhu with a bullet wound in his head and, a revolver, alongside of him. He was a prominent Freemason, president of the Amateur Athletic Association, steward of the Auckland Racing Club, and a leading official of the Pakuranga Hunt Club. He suffered from insomnia, caused by worry over the depressed state of the gum market. At the inquest the jury returned a verdict of suicide while in a state of temporary insanity, caused by excessive strain resulting from commercial trouble. He leaves a widow and sir children. The statement that Mr Massey’s nomination for Waitemata is invalid is contradicted. There are three nominators, end even if one had not the requisite qualifications the paper would still be valid. At the Stipendiary Magistrate’s Court a charge of perjury against A. Heany, a bankrupt, was dismissed. The Magistrate said that there was no evidence of fraud. Other charges were withdrawn. At the opening lecture of the School of Music by Professor Schmitt, Sir Maurice O’Eorke presented certificates to last year’s successful competitors, and urged Auckland to send up more students. A student. Miss Dorwigan, sang a song of her own composition. The lady Mayor of Onehunga, Mrs Yates, proposed a vote of thanks to Sir Maurice O’Rorke. Mrs Sarah Rowe, who swallowed match heads, died of phosphorus poisoning at the hospital to-night.
