Government is proceeding apace with the scheme for lending cheap money to farmers, but soma details yet remain to be worked out. The main machinery will ba on the lines of the French Credit Fonder. LIBEL ACTION. The further trial of the libel action, Sneight v. Syme, begins on Monday. AUSTRALIAN NATIVES’ CONFERENCE. The Australian Natives’ Conference has decided to support women’s franchise and the fixing of a minimum rate of wages. COAL IN NEW GUINEA. BRISBANE, March 30. The administration of New Guinea reports the discovery of a splendid seam of coal near the Burary river. ‘•NEW AUSTRALIA.” SYDNEY. March 30. The Daily Telegraph condemns the proposal of the Premier to expend money in bringing back the New Australians. It declares that the matter is an Imperial ono, ao the settlers are British subjects in a foreign country. AN IMPORTANT DECISION. The full Court to-day delivered an important decision, holding that a prisoner who had been convicted twice of the same offenca should be discharged. The prisoner’s first conviction had been quashed on the ground that evidence had been allowed which was inadmissible, nevertheless, on the second trial he was again convicted. The Chief Justice differed from the view taken by the rest of the Court, and s>gued that the second conviction should held good.
