WHAT IS LIBERALISM ?

TO THE EDITOR.

Sir,—l know you sra somewhat of a sportsman. Have you ever seen the fun of “ drawing a badger ? ” Your genteel morning contemporary is doing a little of that sort of thing in a miicl way just now, by trying to get a definition of “Liberalism.” Why should Christchurch not have a little mild competition in tho missing-word style of thing, but quite legal? Let as many as choose to do so send into you a definition of tho term “Liberal or Liberalism” as applied to Government, With the letter tht-y enclose a shilling’s worth of postage stamps, and whoever gives ihe best and second b“st definition let tbe amount ba divided at the rate of two-thirds and one-third. If the parties gaining tho prizes give them to Herrick’s Homo towards a Christmas dinner bo much the better. We all know that tho Whig and Tory of our father’s day are as dead as Julius Cmsar, and have given place to the more modern Conservative and Liberal, which in turn will, no doubt, give place to other names so long as party government is the rule. What wc have to do with just now in the matter ie—What is understood by the expression “ A Liberal Government ? I am, Ac., AN ULSTER SCOT. p. 5 _The definition may be original or otherwise, I suppose.
