VOLCANO AT THE KAIKOURAS.
TO THE EDITOR. Sib, —In the New Zealand Spectator for 1855 I find a letter from a gentleman who describes a volcano at the Kaikouras which he had just seen in a etate of activity. He says:—“lt ,1s situated about twenty miles to the southward of Capa Campbell, and under the snowy range of the Kai Kora. Whilst on my passage from the Chatham Islands to Port Nicholson, being detained off the above coast by stress of weather, from tho deck of the schooner Lady Grey T had an opportunity of beholding- it ■ for three successive nights in a state of activity. The cone in size is inconsiderable, being surrounded by others of much greater altitude. It is, apparently, about two miles distant from the sea. During the d&y the flame is, of coarse, invisible, a few thin wreaths of white vapour and a dense canopy of smoke alone indicating its existence. But as the darkness of the evening increases, the glow from the crater becomes gradually perceptible, until at length the flame can be seen rising in a thin and unsteady column to- a great height. lam credibly informed that a volcano did, not exist in that locality previous to the last severe earthquake.” Can you or any of your readers kindly supply any information as to later activity of this volcano ?—I am., &c., MONTAGUE MOSLEY. Christchurch, Dec. 7.
